Research done by MedlinePlus tells us that in the USA men generally consume about 13mg of zinc a day. The question is about mega-dosing and taking zinc supplements when you don’t need them.

The Mayo Clinic proved that zinc supplementation of 4.5 to 24 milligrams of zinc every 2 hours helps to reduce symptoms of any common cold. In a later study done on zinc they showed supplementation of 20 to 150mg per day will improve the immune system response.

Even higher doses of zinc of over 220mg a day showed an increase in the sperm count of senior citizens in another study. The point is that depending on your specific requirements mega-dosing with zinc may be beneficial. However we need to make sure that it is directed by a doctor.
