Nettle (Urtica urens and Urtica dioica) commonly called stinging nettles are perennial plants found in Europe the USA and parts of Canada. The nettle root is commonly used but the stems and leaves also have medicinal qualities.

Nettle has a long history used for hundreds of years in many different traditional and folk medicine treatments for treating gout, eczema, joint pain, arthritis and asthma. Juice made from the stinging nettle plant is also used for hair growth as well as arthritis and allergic rhinitis.

A study done on nettle at the University of Maryland Medical Center demonstrated that it can significantly reduce the symptoms of an enlarged prostrate. However many of these studies have not proven that it can reduce the size of the prostrate.

Many other controlled clinical studies are able to show it can alleviate the many symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or prostate enlargement. The nettle root has also shown benefits for aging men. Stinging nettle contains lignans that help prevent the binding of a sex hormone-binding of globulin to testosterone.

This is able to help ensure that there is more free testosterone available in order to increase male vitality and sexual functions. Although it has not been conclusively proven many bodybuilders believe that taking nettle will reduce the aromatization of testosterone into estrogen.

Extracts of nettle root can be purchased as a dried leaf to make tea or tincture as well as capsules. When taking capsules nettle a dosage of about 120 mg twice a day is recommended. When using a tincture 2 to 4 ml should be taken three times a day. It is also easy to make a pot of tea mixing in 3 tablespoons of dried root for 5 minutes.
